Designer Niels Diffrient aimed to design an office chair that would automatically adjust to the user, allowing them to move freely from one position to another. Diffrient’s unique approach eliminated the complexities found in other chairs, such as heavy reclining levers and back tension dials for a truly ergonomic work chair. As a result, he developed a reclining mechanism that adapts perfectly to the user, definitively reinventing modern work chairs to be truly simple, functional and beautiful.
During his lifetime, Diffrient was central to the mid-century modern design movement, with famous designers such as Eero Saarinen, Ettore Sottsass, Charles Eames, Marco Zanuso and Henry Dreyfuss as colleagues and friends. Diffrient held more than 50 patents and 75 awards, including the 2002 Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award, the National Design Museum and the 1996 Chrysler Design Award. In 1987, Diffrient was named a Royal Designer for Industry (Hon RDI ) by the British Royal Society of Arts.
