Jamie Dimon’s Letter To Shareholders, Annual Report 2021
As we previously reported, it played an indirect role in killing America’s first Treasury Secretary, winning World War I, contributing to the 2008 financial crisis and averting a more catastrophic financial catastrophe.
Of course, people who work for a company with such influence are paid quite well, judging by the self-reported salary and bonus figures on the job review site Glassdoor.
For example, the salary of the investment bank vice president is reported as $172,902, while bonuses almost double the annual compensation to a substantial $337,121.
According to Glassdoor, here’s the combined compensation — annual salary and bonuses — for 15 positions at JPMorgan, in ascending order:

Drake Baer is Insider’s first editor-in-chief and works in the newsroom to produce ambitious journalism. For the past two and a half years, Baer has served as deputy editor, leading a team of more than 20 reporters and editors on the future of work, real estate, and small business. The fast team has been behind some of Insider’s big packs in recent years, including a state-by-state breakdown of unemployment in the first year of the pandemic and in-depth profiles of “niche celebrity” characters like real estate media mogul Brandon Turner and HR icon Johnny. C. Taylor. They shed new light on big names like Joe Biden, America’s imperfect leader. He also cultivates thesis-oriented opinion journalism, whether it’s why “‘diversity’ and ‘inclusion’ are the emptiest words in corporate America” or why it’s actually a terrible time to buy a house. (No, really.) Prior to editing, his byline was as a masthead reporter for Fast Company and New York Magazine, covering many intersections of social sciences, business, and economics. Baer has interviewed some of the leading minds of our time, including philanthropist Bill Gates, FiveThirtyEight founder Nate Silver, NBA champion and investor Steph Curry, Growth Mindset psychologist Carol Dweck, rapper Q-Tip, Nobel Prize winner Daniel Kahneman and the man who has a name for “disruptive innovation”, the late Clay Christensen. Baer has published two books, the most recent being Perception: How Our Bodies Shape Our Minds, with Dennis Proffitt. In 2014, New York Times best-selling author and Wharton professor Adam Grant labeled his first book, Everything Connects, as one of 12 business books to read that year. He has appeared as a speaker at the Aspen Ideas Festival, presented at TedX Princeton, and moderated numerous panels. Fun facts? He meditated every day for over a decade, except for the days when he didn’t. He traveled the world before he was 25. He likes and can advocate for almost any food except grapefruit. And at the age of 35, he is now learning to draw. Investment bank analysts are typically hired right out of college for a two-year program that is sometimes extended to a third year.
For most first-year investment banking analysts, the average “all-in” comp comes in at around $170,000 to $190,000.
The table below summarizes the average remuneration for 1st year, 2nd year and the increasingly rare 3rd year analyst.

Traditionally, investment bank analysts receive their first-year bonus 12 months after arrival and do not switch to calendar-year bonuses until they are promoted to associate (“a to a”).
However, companies are increasingly turning to the “stub year” model for IB analysts to reset their bonuses to the end of the calendar year in December. In this case, analysts receive a “small” chunk at the end of their first calendar year (usually $30,000 – $35,000 just 5 months after arrival), with the next bonus 12 months later.
As in the US, there is a standard base: in London, almost all companies currently offer a £60,000 base, rising to £65,000 and £70,000 for 2nd and 3rd year analysts respectively.
The salary is comparable to London after adjusting from GBP to EUR and includes smaller financial centers in Europe such as Switzerland, Frankfurt and Zurich.

The absolute top earn 100% of their base salary as a bonus (in some rare cases even 105% of the base), while the weakest analysts at most companies receive 70% of the base salary.
In many companies, being placed at the bottom of the group is also a not-so-subtle indicator that you won’t be promoted later on.
How analysts rank against others in the group – as opposed to how they rank against other groups or between other companies – is therefore the most important indicator of career prospects within the company.
Investment banks primarily organize their groups around sectors (“coverage”) and compete with other companies based on the number of deals they have made in each sector.

If an analyst is in an industry group that has closed many deals and generated a lot of revenue for the bank, the bonus pool for that group will be larger than for less successful groups.
At the end of each year, banks invest a certain percentage of company-generated income for workers’ compensation.
Not all investment banks are created equal – a select few, known as bulge bracket firms, work on multi-billion dollar deals and exist within a huge global financial institution (e.g. Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and JP Morgan).
Others, called elite boutiques, work on similarly large deals, but focus exclusively on investment banking M&A advisory (e.g., Evercore, Lazard, and Guggenheim).

Finally, others target the middle market. While you can lower this in several ways, compensation is generally pretty well defined in most “elite” companies:
With banks increasingly struggling to retain analysts who choose private equity (despite the more relaxed dress code), fewer analysts are staying through their second year, let alone a third.
Johnson Associates, a compensation consulting firm, expects year-end incentives (ie bonuses) to rise to the highest level since the Great Recession in 2008 as the financial services sector benefits from a sharp drop in deal volume.
In 2021, Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan are preparing to pay out bigger bonuses to their investment bankers, and virtually all investment banks are following suit.
J.p. Morgan Revamps Advisor Compensation Amid Recruiting Push
For example, Goldman Sachs is expected to raise base salaries for its entry-level investment banking analysts from $85,000 to $110,000.
Therefore, in addition to increasing base pay, the top banks are focusing on building a pay-for-performance culture.

(Bloomberg) — Jamie Dimon had a few surprises when he took part in a conference call with a group of wealth advisors from JPMorgan Chase & Co.
The largest US bank revamps its 20-year-old payment structure for J.P. Morgan Advisors, a traditional brokerage firm, said a few months ago that it is aiming to double its number of employees to about 1,000. The Chief Executive Officer told staff the new system is coming ahead of a meeting with the Queen, according to people with knowledge of the conversation. The changes should encourage advisers to stay with the bank.
“We’re making this the best place to build your practice and serve your clients throughout your career,” Dimon told attendees during the call. “It’s not just about hiring more consultants and updating compensation. It’s about creating concierge services, improved products, investing in talent and marketing.

The move comes as Wall Street faces pressure to boost payments as the pandemic stimulates customer and business demand, boosts profits and forces finance industry leaders to ensure their workforce is not vulnerable to competitor poaching. JPMorgan said last week that its spending is likely to increase in 2022 as it pays more.
The revised compensation structure is tied to revenue production, according to a memo sent to staff on Tuesday. It offers a seniority award for top performers with additional income, payable in limited shares. Another component, also paid in RSUs, will reward advisors with large flows of private clients.
