Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Georgia, accounting for one-third of all deaths in the state. Several counties in South Georgia have among the highest death rates from heart disease in Georgia. It is estimated that more than 30% of deaths in Thomas County are related to underlying cardiovascular disease.
Loudermilk Heart and Vascular Center strives to counter these statistics by offering state-of-the-art life-saving interventional cardiology procedures, including coronary angioplasty and stenting.
On the day Hurricane Irma hit South Georgia, Cohn woke up early in the morning with chest pain and tightness.
“I felt tightness in my chest for three or four days and thought it was a pulled muscle,” says John.

“I woke up my wife and told her we needed to go to the emergency room as a precaution,” Cohn said. “I could tell something was wrong, but I never thought it was anything serious. I wasn’t showing the usual symptoms of a heart attack.”
Although the symptoms of a heart attack can vary, people often experience pain in the chest, jaw, left arm, or upper abdomen, as well as dizziness, fatigue, lightheadedness, cold sweats, and lightheadedness. Heart disease is hereditary. So, if someone in your family has had a heart attack, you are also at higher risk.
“I have heart problems in my family,” Cohn said. “My father died of a heart attack at the age of 49, and my uncle at the age of 42. I have always tried to take care of my health, so I decided to come to the hospital because the pain does not go away.”
Once he arrived, the staff settled him in quickly and comfortably. One of the cardiologists, Bob Miles, MD, immediately met with Kohn and decided on treatment.

“Dr. Miles told me the best way to find out if the pain was coming from a blocked artery or if my heart was a cardiac catheterization,” Cohn said. “I agreed, and we were able to set it up with interventional cardiologist Clay Sizemore, MD.”
Within three hours, Cone was taken to a catheterization lab (cath lab), equipped with advanced diagnostic imaging equipment used to visualize the heart’s vessels and chambers and treat abnormalities.
Dr. Miles and Dr. They were able to place a catheter in Sizemore John’s wrist and found a 70% blockage in his artery.
“I was impressed with the care I received,” Cone said. “Best of all, I had access to this level of care in my hometown and was able to go home the same day.”

“He was helping me change one of our grandchildren’s diapers,” said Kim Foster, Mr. Foster’s wife. “He was standing behind me and I heard him scream and fall. He was not breathing and had no pulse.
Thankfully, the church had two paramedics, two EMTs and 3 nurses to help Mr. Foister until the ambulance arrived.
“I didn’t really have heart attack symptoms that day, but I had indigestion and jaw pain in the days leading up to it,” Foster said.
What Make Us Different
Mr. Upon arriving at the hospital, Foster immediately went to the catheterization lab, where MD Dr. Christopher Daniels performed cardiac catheterization/intervention.
“I don’t remember anything from that day,” Foster said. “I didn’t realize I was having a heart attack until a few days later.”
“He was very confused, he didn’t understand what was happening and why he was catheterizing/intervening on his heart,” Ms Foister said.
Foyster had two stents inserted in the same artery on Sunday and left the hospital the following Thursday with a portable defibrillator.

“When he left, his heart was only working at 34% and Dr. Daniels told us it would be a while before he could get back to work,” Ms. Foister said.
“Prior to this experience, I knew there was a cath lab and did various procedures, but I never thought about the extent of the service they provided,” Foster said. “Through this experience, I realized how important the Heart and Vascular Center is to our community and how the procedures they provide save lives.”
“It’s important to have a facility here in Thomasville that offers life-saving cardiac procedures,” Ms. Foster said. “If Loudermilk Heart and Vascular Center wasn’t here, we would be telling a very different story.”
“I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for Dr. Daniels and Kelly Ledger, a nurse practitioner, along with our church family,” Foster said. “They saved my life.”

One day, Homer Pankey was working on his antique 1955 Ford Crown Victoria when he showed signs of a rapid heartbeat that would not return to normal.
“Before I went to the emergency room, I called my cardiologist, Jim Karas, to make sure,” Mr. Pankey said. “He listened to me describe my symptoms and calmly but firmly told me to call the emergency department.
Dr. Karas determined that Mr. Panky’s heart was beating too fast that day, indicating atrial fibrillation.
After Mr. Pankey arrived at the hospital, he was given oxygen, drugs and electric shocks to get his heart beating back to normal. After his condition stabilized, he was admitted to the Cardiac Care Department

After several tests, Dr. Karas concluded that the best treatment was to implant a pacemaker defibrillator into Mr. Panky’s body. An embedded device can monitor the heartbeat and even monitor its rhythm to prevent the next episode.
“I am very grateful to Dr. Karas. He is a highly skilled cardiologist,” said Mr. Pankey.
