At , a job applicant is more than what is written on a resume. Some may not have much of a resume. And according to LaFawn Davis, global president of culture and differentiation, that’s perfectly acceptable, especially with the ever-shrinking pool of recent college graduates to fill entry-level technical positions. “We aim to remove barriers and find talent that other companies may not be looking for,” she said.
An example of this is Hatch, a software engineering apprenticeship designed to be a bridge to a potential career in technology. Hatch helps recruit and grow exceptional talent from sources other technology companies may not have considered. It is especially important for job seekers in underrepresented groups, those with a non-traditional education or self-taught developers who may not rise to the top in the traditional applicant pool.
The Hatch program begins with a rigorous application process, including an extensive online application and coding exercise that allows talent to be identified prior to an applicant interview, and a full day on-site interview for selected applicants. Those who show promise are accepted into a six-month training program, with the goal of turning trainees into full-time software engineers and putting them on their way to senior positions.
Why I Turned Down A Google Software Engineering Internship
Vivek Nair, Director of Engineering Education and Training and Head of the Hatch Program, explained what he looks for in an intern. “The most successful candidates tend to display consistent intellectual honesty, asking many questions to demonstrate their endless curiosity, as well as reinforcing concepts as they are revealed,” said Vivek.
“Those with well-developed technical and interpersonal skills are likely to be a good fit,” he added, noting the expectation of proficiency in at least one programming language, web server, and user interface framework. Experience with web applications, REST APIs, and databases is also advantageous, as is a public GitHub repository for software projects. “It will definitely help the app stand out,” he said.
Soft skills are also essential. “Good communication skills and a thirst for knowledge are very strong indicators of success,” he said. Because it faces the same challenge as any other tech company—not representing certain identities in the engineering organization—Hatch specifically looks for individuals who will contribute to the culture rather than adapt to it. Vivek smiled and said, “Candidates who can prove it will have an advantage.”
Hatch interns spend the first few months together as a group learning about their technology platform while familiarizing themselves with products, systems and processes. In this first phase, the apprentices will work together on an in-house tool or product offering and also build their own applications.
Job Opportunities At Twilio
In phase two, each intern is paired with an engineering manager and technical mentor, and integrated into the product engineering team that delivers customer-facing software features. At both stages, Hatch apprentices have access to formal training to develop their technical and soft skills.
Through focused mentoring and training, he can accelerate the growth of the trainees so that they are productive members of the engineering organization at the end of the six-month course. If so, they are welcome to return as full-time employees.
Vivek is the perfect choice to lead the program: He started out as an intern before returning to the company a year later as a software engineer, eventually using his expertise to create Hatch. Launched in the spring of 2017, nearly every Hatch alumnus has been invited to join the company. “So far, we have converted 92% of our apprentices into full-time positions and 100% of our Hatch graduates are still with us, many on the way to promotion,” says Vivek.
Vivek aims to improve on this criterion when opening applications for its latest Hatch range this month. That’s a big deal: By 2023, he hopes 100 interns will graduate and move on to work full-time. But it goes further than that
