Using Eero With Xfinity Gateway – My modem is in a closet next to the Comcast box in another part of the building (this is required – I can’t move the modem). The POE coax goes into my modem which connects to a Hitron moca 2.5 adapter in the closet and then runs through the coax through the building to another Hitron moca 2.5 adapter, see diagram. When you connect the Moca adapter to the gateway, the eero will flash white for a few minutes and then turn red; however, if I run the moca adapter on my old linksys router and then the eero gateway, it works perfectly.
In other words, POE > Modem > Moca > Moca > eero = failure, but POE > Modem > Moca > Moca > linksys router > eero = success. The Eero also works perfectly when connected directly to the modem. This tells me there is nothing terribly wrong with the connection, cable, modem, eero gateway or adapters and eero/moca interface. This is confusing for 2 reasons: 1) mocha is just a transparent network system that should work the same way as a network cable (eero shouldn’t even know it exists) and 2) I’ve read online that people connect directly to the network. mocha. adapter and works.

Eero and eero Pro are some of the easiest home Wi-Fi systems to use. They cover your home in reliable Wi-Fi using multiple access points and automatic networking. The main thing to understand before installation is how you connect eero to the Internet. It depends on your internet connection. The goal is to give eero an Ethernet connection to the Internet. I have Verizon FiOS which gives me a standard Ethernet connection that I can connect directly to the Eero. This may not be your situation, but I’ll try to cover some common ones.
Once you have just a modem or modem/router in bridge mode, you just need to connect the Ethernet cable from the modem to one of the eero units.
Once you have an internet connection connected to the main eero unit, you can proceed with the rest of the installation. You can choose the name of your Wi-Fi network, select the room that eero is connected to, and add any other eero units. Once you figure out how to get the internet into the eero head unit, the rest of the setup couldn’t be simpler. You don’t have to be as mean as I am. It’s really painless and fast, not something I usually say about a consumer Wi-Fi system.
One of the most important things to consider when setting up your Eero is where to put it. For most people, this will be determined by where their internet connection is and the layout of their home. If possible, centralize the main eero as much as possible. If your internet connection is in the corner of your house, that’s fine too. Eero systems are smart enough to figure this all out for you, and the setup process lets you know if there’s a problem with your deployment.

My internet connection is in the far corner of the 1st floor, so I put the main eero. I put one on the other side of my 1st floor and one on the 2nd floor. I found this gave the best coverage and speed. Eero devices try to accommodate any placement, but it may take some trial and error to find the best one for your setup. Try placing the Eero high and away from TVs, speakers, microwave ovens, or other electronic devices. sources of interference.
Once you’ve added all your eero units to your network, you can detach and move them around if you need to. You don’t have to go through the installation process again, just make sure to update your location in the app so you know what it is.
Fun fact that proves how good even basic eero coverage is: I tried to screenshot the “Your eero is too far away” error message for this review. I couldn’t get it to happen anywhere in my house, not even the basement or 2nd floor. I had to buy an extension cord and hook up the eero to the far end of my yard. Wi-Fi coverage is seriously impressive.
After installation, you can search the eero app if you want, but your Wi-Fi network is fully configured. You won’t have to log into eero for long unless you want to. The eero app lets you see the devices connected to your network and gives you control over some important settings. You can set a DNS server, enable UPnP, create static IP reservations or port forwarding, and enable IPv6 support. There aren’t many advanced settings, but what most people need for their home network is there. You can also quickly network guests and share details via QR code.
There are some experimental features under the Eero Labs section. In that section, you can enable settings such as bandwidth management, local DNS caching, automatic QoS or WPA3 support for video conferencing and gaming. These settings are in beta and still under development. The caveat seems to be that enabling them may cause problems for some networks and some devices, so use at your own risk. One setting I recommend turning on here would be lane direction. Band routing allows your devices to move more AP-to-AP as you roam. This helps you get better speed and a more stable connection. If you find that any of your devices have issues with lane routing enabled, it’s easy to turn it back off.
In addition to the network settings you have, you should consider some settings for each device. You can be notified when a new device joins your network and turns it on. You can create device profiles, which allow you to control what the device is allowed to do. For example, you can create a device profile for “kids”, turn off access to their devices at certain times, and block access to content for adults. Content blocking and filtering requires a subscription to eero Secure or Secure+, but other features are free.
